  1. Southern Power Company was formed in 1905- Its name was changed to Duke Power Company in 1924. This picture is no earlier than 1918, as the Wachovia Bank & Trust Building is shown with the 8th story added in 1918. The city directories for 1918-1923, show Southern Power Company’s office to be at 249 North Main Street, the address, with the sign atop, depicted in this photo. Some time after Southern Power’s name was changed to Duke Power, Duke Power opened an office in the 300 block of North Main Street, where present day Winston-Towers now stands. The northeast corner of Main and Fourth streets was occupied by City Hall in 1893, many years before Southern Power Company was formed. City Hall was torn down in 1927 to make way for the RJ Reynolds building which continues to occupy that corner.
