Bowman Gray, Sr. Portrait

Bowman Gray, Sr. was born in 1874 to James Alexander Gray and Aurelia Bowman. In 1902, he married Nathalie Lyons (pictured here with Coy Carpenter, Dean of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine). The Grays had two sons, Bowman Gray, Jr. and Gordon Gray. Mr. Gray accumulated wealth while working his way to the top of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Being a philanthropist, he contributed generously to orphanages and hospitals. While on a cruise in 1935 with his family, he died suddenly of a heart attack and was buried at sea. A benevolent fund that was created by Mr. Gray contributed to the establishment of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1941.
