AirCare Arrives

North Carolina Baptist Hospital’s first purchased helicopter arrives after several months of seeing a loaned helicopter on the helipad located at the corner of Queen Street and Medical Center Boulevard. Baptist Hospital’s black, white and gold helicopter arrived in early August 1986. The air ambulance service proved to be busy with more than 150 patient transport calls being made the first three months since the service began. The lift-off fee for AirCare flights in 1986 was $780.00. In addition, the service charged $17.50 per mile while the patient is on board and also charged for various procedures. Most insurance companies did not pay for the service.
