AirCare Begins

AirCare, which is North Carolina Baptist Hospital’s “helicopter ambulance”, made its first lift-off on May 15, 1986. While the AirCare helicopter, which Baptist Hospital purchased, was being prepared according to hospital specifications, a temporary, but fully equipped loan helicopter was provided. Baptist Hospital had a contract with Rocky Mountain Helicopter, Inc., in Provo, Utah for the daily operation of the AirCare helicopter. Rocky Mountain, which provided three pilots for the program, was responsible for the maintenance of the loaned helicopter. A Bell 222-UT helicopter is shown here in a press conference at the hospital’s new helipad which was then located at the corner of Queen Street and Medical Center Boulevard. AirCare serves a 150-mile radius of Winston-Salem which not only included Winston-Salem, NC, but also sections of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina. (NOTE: All of North Carolina Baptist Hospital’s owned AirCare helicopters had runners, the loaned helicopters had wheels.)
