Amos Cottage Therapy

In 1950, Carles L. Amos Sr. of High Point, NC contributed $50,000 to Bowman Gray School of Medicine for the construction of a building at the Graylyn Estate. This building was used for care and treatment of geriatric patients. By 1958, this building, known as “Amos Cottage” had been converted to the Graylyn School for Exceptional Children. In 1962, the Bowman Gray School of Medicine officially adopted the name “Amos Cottage” and became licensed as a unit of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital. In 1974, Amos Cottage received an independent license and became a Rehabilitation Hospital for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. In 1975, Amos Cottage moved to its current location, which is located in the shadow of Forsyth Memorial Hospital on Silas Creek Parkway. This photo shows a physical therapist working with three children in 1973. The only person identified in the photo is “Missy” Carmen Michelle Mills (far right) who passed away in January 1989 at the age of 21.
