Dr. Eben Alexander, Jr.

Dr. Eben Alexander, Jr., was a pioneering academic neurosurgeon at the Medical Center. He began his career at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1949. During his tenure, Dr. Alexander served as chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and as the Medical Center’s first Chief of Professional Services from 1953-1973. He trained more than thirty-five surgical residents and was instrumental in the Medical Center being ranked as one of America’s Best Hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery. Dr. Alexander passed away in 2004 at the age of 91.

  1. Dr. A was one of the best–tough on his residents but fair and
    honest. A gregarious warm person, intelligent, and stimulating to be around, He was a real teacher and a friend at all times, Not ever
    to be forgotten by patients, friends and residents, Hats off!

  2. I think that this Dr. Alexander performed 5 surgeries on my spine between 1953 – 1955 when I was a toddler. My mother, who recently passed away, always remembered him as a compassionate doctor and a miracle worker since he saved my little life!
