Dr. George Rovere

Dr. George Rovere joined the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1972 as the assistant professor of orthopedics. In 1980 he was named the director of the new Sports Medicine program at Wake Forest’s Reynolda campus and in 1983 was named orthopedic professor, head of orthopedic surgery and also team physician for the Wake Forest University athletic department. Dr. Rovere always strived to do whatever was needed to give the best care of Wake Forest athletes. This included a doctor at all football games, home and away, at basketball games and high-risk practice sessions which included scrimmages. Away from game time, Dr. Rovere was busy working with athletes on the practice field and in the training rooms. This photo shows Dr. Rovere (sitting) with former Deacon quarterback, Foy White, as they discuss a former injury that Foy had received during a game against UNC. Also pictured is head trainer for WFU, Steve Yates. Dr. Rovere passed away in November 1988 after a two-year battle with cancer.
