Dr. Robert W. Prichard in the Library

Dr. Prichard came to Bowman Gray School of Medicine as an Instructor in Pathology in 1951. He had a great love for teaching, but “it was his love for the history of medicine that really lit his candle, and fired up countless numbers of medical students.” He even wrote a book entitled “History of Medicine in Forsyth County” that tells about the first doctors and hospitals in this area. Dr. Prichard graciously donated his entire collection including his history of medicine collection to the Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives. Dr. Prichard passed away in 1995 of a heart attack at the age of 72. Standing and shelving books is Librarian, Miss Nell Benton. She came to Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1944 as the Assistant Librarian. She became the Librarian in 1945 and maintained that position until retiring in 1963 with eighteen years of service.
