First Hired Full-Time Horticulturist

David Evans was hired in 1989 as the hospital’s first horticulturist to make the North Carolina Baptist Hospital grounds look “as good as we are”. Evans and his crew of five planted 10,000 bulbs that bloomed in the Spring of 1990 showing off the red, yellow and orange of the beautiful flowers. He also planted 5,000 annuals just about the time that these were blooming. Evans states “I received calls from people I didn’t even know telling me how good the flowers made them feel when they came to work!” Evans was responsible for the upkeep of approximately seven acres of grass and four to five acres of planting areas including the Pastoral Care area across the street from the Medical Center.
