Jeff Richardson, First Heart Transplant Recipient

On July 7, 1986, Jeff became the first patient to undergo heart transplant surgery at the Medical Center. The 17-year-old had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was given only three months to live unless he received a new heart. By July 1987, six other heart transplants had been performed. Five survived. Dr. Barry Hackshaw, a cardiologist, was in charge of the transplant program at the time the transplants were performed.
