Mini-Intensive Care Nursery

Brenner Children’s Hospital infant transport began in 1987 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital as one of the largest neonatal/pediatric transport systems in the United States. The infant transporting ambulance is like a mini-intensive care nursery equipped with transport incubators, heart monitors, ventilators and pumps. Each vehicle carries two “transporters,” a registered nurse and respiratory therapist. They travel by ambulance or helicopter to community hospitals in a 20-county region to stabilize premature or sick infants and bring them to Brenner’s neonatal or pediatric intensive care nurseries. The early care given to newly born babies is vital to their survival. The Brenner Children’s Hospital infant transport operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
