Physician Assistant Program

The Physician Assistant program of Bowman Gray School of Medicine accepted the first class of eight students in September 1969, with James L. Pharris as administrative director. Tom Guy (shown on right) was the first P.A. to be hired at the Medical Center to work in the Emergency Department. The very first P.A. program was actually started at Duke Medical School two years earlier. Bowman Gray School of Medicine used Duke’s experiences as a model when opening the program here. Physician Assistants are skilled members of the health care team who, working under the supervision of licensed physicians, provide a broad range of medical services in almost all health care settings.
