Stereotactic Laser Surgery

The Medical Center became the first in the Carolinas to treat tumors and blood vessel abnormalities deep within the brain by using stereotactic radiosurgery, a process so precise that it destroys the tumor or vessel problem with no effect on surrounding tissue. The mechanical device shown here has head-holding clamps and bars which puts the head in a fixed position in reference to three specific coordinates. It is a minimally-invasive surgery that usually allows the patient to return home the same day.
