A Whole Community Helped

Twelve-year-old Carol Cockerham, shown here with Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Cockerham and an unidentified hospital attendant, returns home to North Wilkesboro in November 1960 after heart surgery. Carol arrived at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in August 1960 with a malfunctioning heart. Her condition required complicated open heart surgery in which surgeons used a heart-lung machine located at NCBH. The response of neighbors, a radio station’s plea for blood, and the skill and care of the doctors and nurses made Carol’s heart surgery a success.
