AirCare Begins

AirCare, which is North Carolina Baptist Hospital’s “helicopter ambulance”, made its first lift-off on May 15, 1986. Rocky Mountain, which provided three pilots for the program, was responsible for the maintenance of the loaned helicopter. A Bell 412 helicopter is shown here in a press conference at the hospital’s new helipad which was then located at the corner of Queen Street and Medical Center Boulevard. AirCare serves a 150-mile radius of Winston-Salem which not only included Winston-Salem, NC, but also sections of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina.
