American Red Cross Volunteers

Unidentified American Red Cross Junior Volunteers take a break. The American Red Cross established the North Carolina Baptist Hospital volunteer program in 1951. The teenage volunteers wore blue and white striped uniforms while the adult volunteers wore blue smocks. Neither group of volunteers received any stipend beyond their lunches. All volunteers helped with duties such as running errands for nurses, marking menus for patients, supplying information to visitors, delivering flowers, distributing magazines and books, wheeling patients to and from laboratories and filling pitchers. The volunteer program ran by the Red Cross at North Carolina Baptist Hospital ended in October 1972.
