Annual Christmas Party

Mrs. Nathalie Bernard Gray, wife of Bowman Gray, Sr., shared with her husband his contributions to philanthropic projects. Mrs. Gray and her sister-in-law, Alice Gray, were inseparable in their charitable pursuits. Each year they gave Christmas parties to practically every boy and girl in the city of Winston-Salem. Nathalie provided the finances and Alice did the arrangements. The parties were held at places such as a tobacco warehouse and the Memorial Industrial School. This photo shows a child with Santa at one of the annual Christmas parties at Bowman Gray School of Medicine and North Carolina Baptist Hospital in the amphitheater. Information on the back of the photo states that gifts were not only for the children but also for all of the employees. Men received socks, women received hose. No one is positively identified in this photograph, however, it is believed that Beulah Carroll of the Record Room Department is pictured on the first row at the far right.
