Eye Clinic

An unidentified patient has his eyes checked in the Outpatient Department of North Carolina Baptist Hospital. The “OPD,” as it was called, had 20 separate diagnostic clinics for patients from all over the state. The 19,000-square-foot facility opened on July 1, 1946 at a cost of $250,000. The building was adjacent to both the Nurse’s Home and Old Main. People from all over the state who needed medical care but who could not afford it came to the Outpatient Department and were only charged a $5.00 registration fee plus reduced charges for special x-ray and laboratory work when needed. Fees for return patients in 1948 were fifty cents per visit. Appointments had to be made in advance by letters sent to the Outpatient Director.
