First in State

The Bowman Gray School of Medicine was the first in North Carolina to open a “Developmental Evaluation Clinic.” The clinic opened in 1961 and was part of the State’s overall plan to broaden and improve the health services for children with handicaps. The clinic provided a primary and diagnostic facility through medical, psychological and social investigations in hopes to help find any factors that might cause children to be mentally challenged. Medical students and house officers at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine rotated through the clinic as a regular part of their pediatric training. (L-R) Dr. Alanson Hinman, clinical director of pediatrics and Mr. Robert Gray who was hired by the school in 1964 to take over some of Hinman’s duties including financial affairs, planning/coordination of conferences, seminars and all training programs available through the clinic.
