Interior of Cecil Phanelson's Crane

This 1994 photo depicts the inside of the crane, looking hundreds of feet down at the construction of the Emergency Department/Dietary Building at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Cecil Phanelson was the operator of this Medical Center’s crane. He was “seasoned” as he had already been doing this type of work for 20 years. The cranes main job is to lift, move and place heavy loads of mixed concrete, formed work and reinforced steel around the construction site of the Medical Center. Cecil Phanelson always laughs when people ask him about the inevitable bathroom question. After his chuckle, his response is “well…..obviously you don’t have time to climb down hundreds of feet, so you have to use bottles and plastic bags or a bucket! This particular type of job requires good hand-eye coordination, depth perception, an affinity for high places and a relaxed attitude about personal hygiene.
