Louis Kucera

A researcher in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Dr. Louis Kucera combines compounds with existing drugs to better treat cancer and viruses. Kucera and his colleagues were the first to show in 1988 that the genital herpes virus and the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) can reproduce at the same time in the same white blood cell. In 2001, Kucera Pharmaceutical Company was spun out of joint patents and research at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Kucera’s headquarters were originally located in the Piedmont Triad Research Park but moved to the Research Triangle Park near Raleigh, NC in 2004.
