Master Machinist

Walt Terry came to Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1959 to work as a biomedical engineer. He was known for taking someone’s idea and making it into a life-saving surgical tool. He made a table used in a procedure to separate Siamese twins as well as tiny bronchial brushes for a lung biopsy. His greatest professional challenge was the development of a solid brass disk in 1965 which was used to find certain brain tumors. Terry retired in 1975. This undated photograph depicts an instrument made by Terry.
