Progressive Care Center

An unidentified girl switches the TV channel in a room at the Progressive Care Center. The center was remodeled and opened on March 15, 1961 for the purpose of taking care of hospital patients who did not need full time nursing care. These individuals were capable of taking their own medications, dressing themselves, walking to their meals but were still in need of the services offered by the hospital. It was basically a hospital hotel costing as little as $9.00 a day. Each room was equipped with a private bath, telephone, television, carpeting, silk-wall murals and air conditioning. A large lobby, snack lounge and recreation room were also provided. In 1959, North Carolina Baptist Hospital realized it needed to expand the 80-room Blanche Barrus Nurses’ Home so it bought Twin Castle Apartments adjacent to the home. The old nurses’ home was remodeled and opened as the Progressive Care Center. The building, although not in use as a hospital hotel, is still located at the corner of Hawthorne and Queen streets and used by the hospital.
