  1. My late beloved grandmother, as Miss Ruby Valerie “T” Woollen, 1884-1968 (1906 wed Wm. Alfred Miller), age 17, was Wachovia’s first female employee; a steno-typist for Col. Fries and any of the other otherwise, all male employees. I know this because she told me so as a child; and when an adult I confirmed it in the Salem-whites, City Director at the library.

    It is my understanding the Wachovia grew out of the defunct, Old Salem branch of the Bank of the Cape Fear. My great, great, great grandfather, Richard Bradley, Jr., use to sign the paper money of the Bank of Cape Fear bank. His son-in-law, Stephen Jewett, IV, signed the Bank of Wilmington momey.
