Johanna Elisabeth Meinung (nee Praezel)

The woman in this portrait is possibly Johanna Elisabeth Meinung (nee Praezel), who was born in Salem on January 1, 1785 and died on July 6, 1858. Her parents were Gottfried Praezel and Maria Elisabeth Praezel (nee Engel). She had one sister, Susana Peterson (nee Praezel). Johanna worked in the Salem Girls’ Boarding School for four years teaching music and taking care of the girls. She married Frederick Christian Meinung on September 22, 1808; their marriage was the first marriage between two persons who had been born in Salem. They had six children together: Wilhem Ludwig; Lisette Carolina; Emilie Charlotte; Ernst Heinrich; Edwin Augustus; and Alexander.
