Forsyth Riflemen

The Forsyth Riflemen march in Winston. This photograph is labeled “Forsyth Riflemen — Capt. Joe Terry in Command.” The Forsyth Riflemen was the first permanent military organization in Wachovia and traces its beginnings to the War of 1812. The unit also saw service in the Mexican War and World War I.

  1. Longtime commander J.C. Bessent retired ca. 1903 and Joe Terry was promoted to captain and became the commander of the Riflemen, who were Co. C, 1st Regt., NC State Guard (later national Guard).
