Dr. Richard Patterson

Dr. Richard B. Patterson came to Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1960 and developed the first program in North Carolina to treat children with leukemia and other cancers. He ran the term and preterm nurseries at North Carolina Baptist Hospital from 1963-1970. Except for one year at Chapel Hill and two in the Navy, Dr. Patterson’s 31-year career was at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He is a 1951 graduate of Davidson College and 1955 graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Dr. Patterson retired July 1, 1991 as professor of pediatrics and chief of pediatric oncology.
