Written around this photograph is, “DEC. 13 1937 STAGE COACH ARRIVES AT SALEM COLLEGE. / ED ANDERSON DRIVER. / W.J. HALL ASSISTING MISS SUMNER TO ALIGHT.” This stagecoach, named Hattie Butner, was purchased by Edwin T. Clemmons in 1872 for his stagecoach line based in the Clemmons area of Forsyth County. This photograph was taken during a ” Romance of Transportation Pageant” that paraded the stagecoach from Old Salem to the Robert E. Lee Hotel in downtown Winston.

  1. My mother, Josephine Hutchison Fitts was in the Salem College Class of 1939. She would have been there then, but I don’t remember her telling me about it.
