Because We Care

This white star remembers a pediatric patient who died at Brenner Children’s Hospital of North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Pediatric Registered Nurse Linda Burdick lost a child in 1993 and in 1996 she started Because We Care, a bereavement support group. From this group came an annual memorial service to remember pediatric patients who died at Brenner. A twelve-foot tree was decorated with white lights and white stars bearing each child’s name. Hospital Chaplain Sharon Engebretson led the service. At the end of the service, parents were invited to take their child’s star from the tree.
