John Bivins Jr.

John Bivins (1940-2001), then Old Salem’s director of restoration and curator, carves a longrifle. John Bivins was a noted author, gunsmith, and scholar. In addition to his contributions for Old Salem during the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was instrumental in the development of the collection and publications program at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) at Old Salem from 1980 until his death in 2001.
