  1. This is a photo of my late father Wilbur Ross. My father was a legendary track & field coach who coached some of the biggest names in the sport such as Renaldo Nehemiah, Roger Kingdom, Greg Foster, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Willie Gault etc. etc. My dad was extremely competitive person and was a student of excellence.

  2. This team included Elias Gilbert, the world record holder in the high hurdles. Unless my mind is playing tricks, that is him in the middle of the front row. You can find more pix of him by using the search feature.

This team went on to win the state AAU championship and also the NAIA national championship in Sioux City, SD in 1959 and 1960.

  3. Mr. Ross, I am enligtened and highly impressed. Not an original North Carolinian, information such as this worth sharing. I hope you are doing your Dad proud in excellence.

  4. I was there in 1959, running for East Texas state when, Winston Salem beat us by one point in the NAIA meet, Mr. Paul Winder of Morgan ST. won the 100 in 9.9 but I got lucky in the 220 yard dash and beat Stone Johnson(2) and Paul Windert(3) with a time of 21.4. Mr Ross I meet you dad, and your dad was truely a fine man.

  5. I was a freshman along with Russ Rodgers, Dewey Gardner,Robert Jackson and Bob Manning, I learned a great deal from all my teammates including Fran Washington, Joe Middleton and Charlie Lewis and went on the excel in Calif T&F and was the European Air Force Champion (1961-63) much credit goes to Coach Ross (I’am now a T&F coach in Calif)

  6. Kudos to all my teammates most especially, Fran,Joe & Charlie for all their great advice both athletically and humanistically.Coach Ross taught me everything I know about hurdling (I went from a 15.0 HS hurdler to a 13.65 collegiate and USAF European Champion. (I’am now a proud HS coachin Calif…………kudos to all my teammates

  7. My father told me that there’s no man greater than he and he proved it in his craft. The greatest hurdling coach even up till today my brother has taken his place as one of the greatest hurdling coaches of today Tony Ross. Now I’m 68 years old and I still miss it. He was hard but he was fair when I say hard he didn’t take no junk from nobody when it came down to his craft. I’m missing for the rest of my life love you Dad
