  1. Growing up, I belive this to be Mr. Gilbert who was an elementary school teacher here. There was also a 110m hurdle race, where the winner was given a trophy which beared his name. The meet was held annually at Towson State University. Mr. Gilbert is better known and honored outside of this area.

  2. i recall mr. gilbert at this time as he assisted with the track proram at atkins high school in winston salem,n.c.

  3. Elias Gilbert is reputed to be the only hurlder to defeat Olympian Lee Calhoun twice in his career

  4. I remember Mr. Gilbert very fondly. He was my high school high hurdles coach at Ballou High School in the late 1970s. Wonderful man and great teacher. We used to call him the “Goat” :-)
He coached me twice to compete in the US Nations High School Track and Field meet.

  5. I ran in the race at the 5th Regiment Armory in Baltimore in 1956 when Mr. Gilbert edged out Mr. Calhoun by inches.
