ASTP at Hanes Field

Army Specialized Training Program medical students are seen here marching at Hanes Field in Winston-Salem, NC in the 1940’s. The Army Specialized Training Program was a military training program implemented in late 1942 that was instituted by the U.S. Army during World War II at a number of American universities to meet wartime demands for junior officers and soldiers with technical skills. The program included intensive (approximately 25 class-time hours per quarter) courses in engineering and science at land grant colleges around the country.
