Switchboard Operator, Mrs. Ruth Kiger

Shown here is Mrs. Ruth Kiger, one of nine operators hired to work the never-ending succession of phone answering, paging and dialing numbers out at North Carolina Baptist Hospital and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1957. They had three operators per shift to manage the 400 extensions that buzzed twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week.
