AirCare Begins

AirCare, which is North Carolina Baptist Hospital’s “helicopter ambulance”, made its first lift-off on May 15, 1986. A Bell Model 222 helicopter is shown here in a press conference at the hospital’s new helipad which was then located at the corner of Queen Street and Medical Center Boulevard.

  1. The caption incorrectly identifies the 1st of NCBH’s AirCare ships as a Bell 412 – the helicopter pictured here is a Bell Model 222 with retractable landing gear. This ship was replaced with a Black, Gold & White 222 with fixed skids which allowed for fuel & equipment to be carried in the side pods. The Bell 412’s (a 4-blade variant of the venerable 212 “Huey”) came later.
