  1. The date for this picture is incorrect. The house was built by RJ Reynolds’ brother William Neal Reynolds. The 1895 Sanborn Insurance maps show two smaller houses on this lot. The April, 1900 maps show this house with the notation “being built.” Mr. Will and his wife Kate Bitting Reynolds moved into the house later that year.

RJ Reynolds lived in a series of hotel rooms in the 1870s and 1880s. When his new factory #256 was completed in 1890 he lived there for a couple of years, then bought the old Wilson Hotel at Third & Liberty and lived there until 1903 when he moved in with his brother Will and sister-in-law Kate. In 1905 he married his cousin Katherine Smith and they took over the house, Will & Kate moving to the Phoenix Hotel, and later, the Zinzendorf. By 1910, Will & Kate had bought the former M.N. Williamson house next door to RJ and Katherine where they lived until eventually moving to Tanglewood Farms. RJ and Katherine remaine at 666 West Fifth until Reynolda was completed in 1917.
