  1. I know the Southern Rwy was one of the very few railroads that declined to join Amtrak in 1971 (May 1,1971 is when Amtrak took over most RR passenger service in the USA.). The Southern was allowed to discontinue a handful of trains, but kept and upgraded the “Southern Cresent” and a few others until 1978, I think. I’d be very interested to find out what SRR train is pictured here ! Can anyone help? Thanks !

Hi Chip, the train coming into town is the Southern Railway’s Carolina Special, it began in Cincinnati then split in 2 sections in Asheville, with one going to Charleston via Spartanburg, and one going to Raleigh and Goldsboro via Winston and Greensboro. The Crescent went through Greensboro and High Point, traveling between New York and New Orleans, and never went to Winston
