  1. These buildings were located on the west side of the 300 block of North Liberty Street.

  2. Again, Mr. Isenhour is correct. There are three buildings in the background, left to right: The 1st National Bank, the Hanes Building & the Phoenix Hotel. The ladies entrance to the hotel was actually the last door in the Hanes Building, through a men’s clothiers shop.

    R.J. Reynolds lived on the third floor of the bank building, along with his future brother-in-law J.S. Dunn, a young realtor.

    The firefighters are Hose Company Number 2, based in the Town Hall across the square. The equipment is, left to right: hook and ladder truck, steam pumper engine & hose wagon. Two of the horses always stayed in the station, while the other three were used to work the roads until an alarm was sounded.
