Faculty Banquet

Faculty members attend a Bowman Gray School of Medicine banquet in the early 1940s held in the basement of the Reynolds Building which bordered East Fourth and North Main streets. Some of the faculty are Dr. Fred Garvey, Professor of Urology (far left front); Dr. Lucille Hutaff, Hematology and Internist (right table, front left); Dr. Roscoe Wall, Assistant Professor in Surgery in charge of anesthesia (far right front) and Dr. Katherine Anderson, Pediatrician (far right, second person). The 22-story, downtown Reynolds Building was the headquarters for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company where Mr. Bowman Gray, Sr. worked his way to the top. The Bowman Gray Foundation Fund, provided by Mr. Gray’s will, helped establish the Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

  1. My great aunt was Katherine Anderson. I remember Lucy Hutaff because she was good friends with Katherine. My father, James Chappell, worked with Katherine or Katie for many years. He was also a pediatrician.
